I’d like to take a moment to celebrate the wit, and wisdom, of baseball great and cultural icon Yogi Berra, who died on Tuesday at the age of 90.

Berra had a unique perspective on life that some might think of as just a list of rambling, funny malapropisms. There was an element of the absurd in it all but also a unique sort of basic truth at the heart of what he said that is both funny and wise.

I feature a famous quote of his in our Vested writings and coursework, where he says: “You got be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.”  As I said, funny and wise!

Here are some of my favorite Yogi-isms:

– Losing is a learning experience. It teaches you humility. It teaches you to work harder. It’s also a powerful motivator.

– We made too many wrong mistakes.

– A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.

– It’s like deja-vu, all over again.

– Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.

– It gets late early out there.

– I never said most of the things I said.

– You can observe a lot by just watching

– In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

– Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.

– It ain’t over till it’s over.
